What happened April 9th? We Are All Lizelle Hererra! What's Coming Up?

April 8 was a day of wearing green -- on campuses, in offices, to restaurants and clubs. Then on Saturday, April 9 hundreds of people - mainly students and youth, in over 12 cities across the U.S. hit the streets to call people to Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights. To get a sense of what happened, watch this short video compiled by RU4AR or this longer one that includes excerpts of speeches and interviews compiled by "Pete on the Street".

In Honolulu our march was marked by urgency, great energy, new faces, green bandanas and clothing. After a short rally our group of about 60 people headed for the saturday Kaka`ako Open Market. People shopping, eating, and sitting under the trees suddenly looked up when they heard our loud chants and bells - many raising their fists, giving us a thumbs up, or taking photos. After leaving the market we headed up Ala Moana Blvd which was jammed with traffic.

Many photos and videos are up on the Refuse Fascism Hawaii social media pages. We're sharing a few photos here. You may have also seen the very good coverage on KITV news that day.

We Are All Lizelle Hererra!
On April 8, Lizelle Herrera (age 26) was arrested and charged with MURDER for allegedly inducing her own abortion in a border town in Texas. Her bail was set at $500,000.

After public outcry, Lizelle was released and charges against her dropped. But tremendous harm was already done. Lizelle was put in handcuffs, locked in a jail cell, called a “murderer,” shamed and demonized before the whole world. And a message of TERROR was sent to ALL women everywhere, especially undocumented women in the Rio Grande Valley now that abortion is banned in nearly all circumstances across Texas.

On Thursday, April 14, Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights held actions in cities across the U.S. In Hawai`i we shared an info table with Planned Parenthood's Generation Action at the UH-Manoa Campus Center, where about 50 students held signs reading "We Are All Lizelle Hererra."

What's Next?
🔊 Thursday, April 21st: Coathanger Day.  Before abortion was legal, many women untwisted wire hangers and inserted them into their vaginas  in a desperate attempt to abort unwanted pregnancies. Countless women died in this way.   Put up coathangers to say "We Won't Go Back!"  Just get a coathanger, attach a small sign to it, and hang it where it will be seen.   Join us to assemble coathangers on Wednesday afternoon, from 2:30-4:30 at Old Stadium Park (Isenberg & King) - or just make them at home.

🔊 Saturday - April 24, 5-7pm. RIDE THE GREEN WAVE FOR ABORTION RIGHTS TROLLEY!
Board the trolley at Kaka'ako Waterfront Park Parking Lot (at the end of Cooke Street near the Medical School) at 5pm. The trolley will be covered in green and will have big banners reading "Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights." Join the chants. Ring your bells. Make some noise as we roll through Ala Moana Park, through Waikiki, and around the Ala Moana Shopping Center before returning to Kaka'ako before 7pm. Reservations are required to guarantee a seat. Send an e-mail to riseup4abortionrightshawaii@gmail.com with your name and phone number. A $10 donation to help cover the cost of the trolley rental is suggested but not mandatory.

GET READY FOR THE NATIONAL WEEK OF ACTION
MAY 8 - MAY 14

Watch for local plans. Go to the riseup4abortionrights.org website regularly. Sign the Statement. Wear Green - the International Symbol for abortion rights!
